Finding Peace: What It Really Means and How Meditation Can Help You Get There
If you've ever typed the words "how do I find peace" into a search engine at 11 o'clock at night, I want you to know something: you are not alone. In fact, when I recently asked my own community what they were longing for most, 90% of them said the same thing. Not better sleep, not more energy, not even less stress — though all of those things matter. What people said they wanted, more than anything, was simply to find peace.
Not the word on a candle. Not a concept they understood intellectually. But a real, lived, felt sense of peace — in the body, in the mind, in the quiet places of the heart.
That answer didn't surprise me, because I spent years longing for the same thing.
What Does It Actually Mean to Find Peace?
We talk about peace as though it's a destination somewhere we'll eventually arrive at if we just sort out our to-do list, or get through this difficult season, or finally stop feeling so overwhelmed.
But in my experience, both personally and in the work I do with clients, peace isn't something that waits for the noise to stop. It's something that lives beneath the noise always present, always available, just waiting for a moment of stillness to rise to the surface.
Finding peace isn't about fixing your life. It's about learning to come home to yourself within it.
My Own Search for Peace — and What Finally Brought It
I spent nearly twenty years running a busy opticians’ practice. From the outside, I had it together. I was capable, organised, and reliable. But underneath all of that, stress had become the background hum of every single day. Anxiety had quietly moved in and made itself at home. I was doing all the right things, but I was completely disconnected from myself.
Then I discovered Reiki.
For those who are new to it, the word Reiki comes from the Japanese words Rei, meaning universal wisdom or higher power, andKi, meaning life force energy. It is a gentle, nurturing practice that works with the body's own energy to encourage deep relaxation and healing. There is nothing to do, nothing to achieve. You simply receive. And in that receiving, something begins to settle.
I remember lying on the treatment bed for the very first time and feeling, for the first time in years, that I could breathe not just with my lungs but with my whole being. Something in me that had been braced for a very long time finally let go.
That was my first real taste of peace. Not the absence of problems. A stillness beneath them.
It changed the entire course of my life. I left my career, trained in Reiki, Reflexology, Crystal Therapy, Hatha Yoga, and Meditation, and I have been holding space for others to find that same stillness ever since.
I share this not to tell my story, but because I know that if you're reading this, you may recognise something of yourself in it, and I want you to know that the peace you're looking for is not as far away as it might feel right now.
Why Meditation Is One of the Most Powerful Paths to Peace
Meditation isn't about emptying your mind — that's one of the most common misconceptions I hear. It's about learning to observe your thoughts without being swept away by them. It's about creating a little space between you and the noise.
And when that space begins to open, something remarkable happens. The nervous system softens. The breath slows. The body releases tension it didn't even know it was holding. And from that place of quiet — clarity, ease, and a genuine sense of peace begin to naturally emerge.
Regular meditation practice has been shown to support:
A calmer, more regulated nervous system
Reduced stress and anxiety
Improved sleep and emotional resilience
A deeper sense of inner stillness and self-awareness
Greater clarity and presence in daily life
Over years of practice and teaching, I have seen meditation change people's lives. Not dramatically, not overnight — but gently, steadily, and profoundly. The person who arrives anxious and disconnected begins, over weeks, to recognise themselves again. The one who said they couldn't possibly switch off begins to find moments of genuine stillness.
This is not magic. This is what happens when the body and mind are finally given permission to rest.
Peace Isn't Something You Chase — It's Something You Create Space For
Here is what I've come to understand most deeply in this work:
Peace doesn't arrive when life gets quieter. It arrives when you do.
It lives in the nervous system that has been given permission to soften. In the breath that has been allowed to slow. In the body that has been held rather than pushed. In the heart that has finally been given room to open.
And perhaps the most powerful question you can sit with today is this:
What would it feel like to stop fighting for peace — and simply allow myself to receive it?
You don't need to answer it. Just let it rest with you for a while.
